“In the first year of his reign I Daniel understood by books the number of the years, whereof the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah the prophet, that he would accomplish seventy years in the desolations of Jerusalem.”- Daniel 9:2 KJV
Why You Should Care
There is a sad but true saying that “if you want to hide something from certain kinds of persons, put it in a book” This is based on the notion that generally these people don’t like reading as a lifestyle to learn, unlearn or relearn.
Daniel activated the deliverance of a nation and a people through reading. The Ethiopian eunuch in the book of the Acts of the Apostles found salvation and became an evangelist to Ethiopia through reading.
If you want to lead in your field of expertise, you must become a reader because leaders are readers and readers can become leaders.
Reading is to your mind what exercise is to your body. Just as you need to exercise regularly to stay physically fit, you need to read constantly to engage your mental faculties and reinvigorate your mind.
What Reading Will Do For You
I believe that life is an adventure in learning and reading books helps you in the learning process because it is a lot cheaper to learn through other people’s experience than from your own personal experience. In my experience, I have discovered that reading can do the following for you:
1. Make you broad in knowledge and keep you well informed
2. Sharpen your intellect and make you mentally astute
3. Keep you current and relevant in your area of gifting or expertise
4. Inspire and motivate you to want more so you can do more
5. Help you find solutions to problems thereby adding value to yourself and others
6. Help you learn from the mistakes of others so that you don’t repeat them
7. Enable you to be mentored from afar thereby gleaning from the wisdom of the sages
To Make Progress
To make progress and embrace the reading lifestyle, I have found the following tips to be helpful:
a. Identifying the area of my passion
b. Being accountable to a reading partner
c. Committing to reading at least 1 book a month in the first instance
d. Buying my own books and building a physical or digital library
Is your library bigger than your wardrobe or is your wardrobe bigger than your library?
Remember that the secrets of great men are in their stories and there is a book that contains the unique solutions to your particular problems, issues or challenges. This is because there is nothing new under the sun. The chances are that people have been where you are presently and told their stories in books, so learn from them and avoid trying to reinvent the wheel.
In today’s world, you can get either physical books, ebooks, audiobooks or a combination of these as you would need. Take advantage of these avenues and change your life one step at a time.
P.S: In another blog post, I will reveal the books that changed my life.
